The Innovation Story runs competitive robotics programs for school teams participating in the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), an international competition where students design, build, and program robots for an annual game.
As a Programming Mentor, you will coach students in writing and improving the code that powers their robots, including autonomous routines, driver controls, sensor integration, and motion control.
Selected Intern's Day-to-day Responsibilities Include
Conduct weekly programming sessions with assigned school teams.
Teach Java and the FTC SDK, including OpModes, hardware mapping, gamepad input, and telemetry.
Guide students through sensors, PID/PIDF tuning, state machines, and path-following frameworks such as Road Runner, Pedro Pathing, and NextFTC.
Set up development environments, introduce Git, and teach systematic debugging and troubleshooting practices.
Help teams develop and refine autonomous routines to make them competition-ready ahead of qualifiers.
Support students during driver practice and help them improve robot control and performance.
Attend scrimmages and competition events and provide on-site technical support while ensuring students remain actively involved in implementing fixes.
Report team progress, challenges, and blockers to the Lead Mentor weekly.
